Knit a Simple Garter Stitch Blanket with DK Weight Yarn

Take on this fun project— a cosy blanket knit with DK weight yarn.

In this blog post, I will walk you through a pattern design created specifically for DK weight yarn, allowing you to make a lightweight and cuddly blanket. Take out your knitting needles, grab a cuppa and your favourite DK-weight yarn, and let's begin!

Materials Needed:

DK weight yarn of your choice (approximately 1000-1200 yards)

Circular knitting needles (size US 6)

Stitch markers

Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Pattern Design:

Size: Approximately 40 inches by 60 inches (adjustable to your desired dimensions)

Step 1: Casting On

Begin by casting on 180 stitches in your preferred cast-on method - I used the long tail cast-on.

Step 2: Knitting the Garter Stitch

Row 1: Slip the first stitch, then knit all stitches.

Row 2: Slip the first stitch and then knit all stitches.

Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until your blanket reaches the desired length or until you have used up most of your yarn, leaving enough for the final rows and binding off.

Step 3: Adding Stripes or Color Blocks (optional)

If you wish to incorporate visual interest into your blanket, consider adding stripes or colour blocks. Change to a new colour yarn at the beginning of a row and continue knitting in the garter stitch—alternate colours as desired to create your desired pattern.

Step 4: Finishing Touches:

It's time to finish up your blanket once it has reached its desired length. Loosely bind off every stitch to create a flexible and comfortable edge.

Step 5: Weaving in Ends and Blocking

Use a tapestry needle to weave in all yarn ends for a professional appearance. Ensure they are securely fastened to prevent any unravelling. In order to finish blocking, wet your blanket, carefully squeeze out the excess water, and then lay it flat to air dry. Blocking helps even out the stitches and enhances the drape of the finished piece.

Create a lovely blanket out of DK weight yarn while enjoying the relaxing comfort of garter stitch knitting. This pattern design, specifically tailored for DK weight, offers a lightweight yet snug result.  This project is appropriate for knitters of all skill levels and lets you create a cosy treasure while enjoying the meditative rhythm of garter stitch.

Your finished blanket will bring cosiness and charm to any room, whether you choose a monochrome style or choose eye-catching colour variations.

So gather your materials, get lost in the joys of knitting, and get ready to create a lovely blanket that will be treasured for years to come.

Happy knitting!
