The Gwyn Shawl

A versatile and elegant triangle shawl that allows you to showcase your favourite yarns.

This shawl begins at the top centre and works its way down, creating a stunning piece with simple increases and stockinette stitch. Perfect for both beginners and experienced knitters, The Gwyn Shawl is customizable to any size, just keep adding rows in 5!


Yarn:
Fingering weight and lace weight yarn.

I used Moonlight Fibre, Everyday Sock (fingering weight) and Suri (lace weight) in the colourway Mauve Over.

Supplies:
Needles: US 4 (3.25mm) 32-inch circular needles.
2 stitch markers, tapestry needle for weaving in ends.100g fingering weight yarn, 50g lace weight yarn


Abbreviations:
CO: Cast On
K: Knit
K2TOG: Knit 2 stitches together
MC: Main Color (Fingering Weight Yarn)
CC: Contrast Color (Lace Weight Yarn)
KFB: Knit Front and Back (1 stitch increase)
PM: Place Marker
SM: Slip Marker
WS: Wrong Side
RS: Right Side
SL1WYIF: Slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in front
SL1WYIB: Slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in the back
SKP: Slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit the next stitch, pass the slipped stitch over (1 stitch decrease)

 

Gauge:

Stockinette stitch 22 stitches and 36 rows on US 4 (3.5mm) needles. Note that your gauge may vary depending on how you block your shawl.


Garter Tab Cast On:
With MC, CO 3 stitches using the long tail cast-on method.
Knit 7 rows. You will have a small rectangular strip.
Pick up and knit 3 purl bumps from the left edge.
Pick up and knit 3 stitches from the CO edge. You should have 9 stitches on your needle.
Turn your work so the WS is facing you.


Setup Rows:
WS: SL1WYIB, p3, PM, p1, PM, p4.
RS: SL1WYIB, k1, KFB, KFB, SM, SL1WYIB, SM, KFB, KFB, k2.
WS: SL1WYIB, purl to end, slipping markers when you come to them.


Main Pattern:
Rows 1-5 (RS) using CC:
SL1WYIB, k1, KFB, knit to 1 stitch before marker, KFB, SM, SL1WYIB, SM, knit to 3 stitches from the end, KFB, SL1WYIB, p1.
Turn work.
Rows 6-10 (WS) using MC:
SL1WYIB, purl to 2 stitches from the end, SL1WYIF, p1, slipping markers when you come to them.
Repeat:
Continue this pattern for another 30 rows, swapping fingering weight to lace weight every 5 rows.


Bind Off:
I-Cord Bind Off:
Knit 2, SKP, then slip the 3 stitches back onto the left needle.
Repeat until 3 stitches remain on the needles.
Finish with a regular knit bind-off: k2, pass the first knit stitch over the second and drop it from the needle, k1, pass the stitch over and drop it from the needle.
Leave enough of a tail to weave in ends.


Blocking:
Finish your shawl by wet blocking or steam blocking. Pin the shawl to the desired dimensions and let it dry completely.
